Types of disabilities

25% of the Dutch population has a functional disability. Not everyone can use the internet equally easily. But who are these people and how do they experience the internet?

  • Visual impairment

  • Auditive disability

  • Cognitive impairment

  • Motor disability

  • Reading and learning disabilities

Digital accessibility helps people with disabilities

A disability only really becomes apparent when it restricts someone online (or offline). People experience their different types of disabilities online only when websites and apps are poorly accessible. Digital accessibility ensures that everyone can participate online.

A digitally accessible website can be used by someone with a disability with fewer or even no restrictions. Even if someone is dependent on assistive software or hardware. A digitally accessible website helps:

  • Perceiving (seeing, hearing and feeling)

  • Control (mouse, keyboard and voice)

  • Understand

  • Using digital services and products

Types of functional impairments

We divide the types of constraints into several groups:

Auditory

Impairments with hearing are also called auditory impairments. A person can be completely deaf or hard of hearing.

Visual

Visual impairments involve vision problems. Some people will not be able to see clearly what is on a website and others will not see the whole website.

Motorised

Physical impairments are also called motor, physical or mobility impairments.

Digital accessibility and physical disabilities

Cognitief

This is a broad group with many different types of disabilities. They may have difficulty understanding or remembering information.

Reading and learning disabilities

For some people, learning and reading is difficult. They work hard but do not make progress. Websites, apps and documents are then often too difficult. Dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia are the main causes, but autism, ADD and ADHD can also play a role.

The elderly and digitisation

Not everyone can keep up with the digitalisation of society equally easily. Certainly even for a large number of older people, it can be quite difficult to keep up with new developments all the time. Fortunately, as an organisation, you can support this.
